Authentic Worship: Yesterday's Manna

“Then Moses said to them, ‘No one is to keep any of it until morning.’ However, some of them paid no attention to Moses; they kept part of it until morning, but it was full of maggots and began to smell.”
– Exodus 16:19-20

“Give us this day our daily bread.” - Matthew 6:11

"As a worship leader, I have the privilege of providing an atmosphere for people to encounter God and be transformed by His love forever! It’s the most wonderful “job” in the whole world! Yet, it’s so easy to get caught up in just focusing on feeding the people I’m leading and forget to feed myself. Sometimes I’ll spend time with the Lord and be seeking Him, yet I won’t spend a lot of time leading myself in worship. Then when it comes to the time of leading worship on stage, I’m trying to go off old revelations and past times of leading myself in worship (yesterday’s manna). Eventually, I’ve gotten to the point where I’m tired, weary, and emotionally and spiritually drained. This is not how God intends for us to live!

This is true not just in leading worship, but in any area of ministry and life as well. We get so caught up in the “doing” of Christian living that we forget about the “being” part of it and we write off our busy-ness as “selfless service” to the Lord.

In Exodus 16, the Israelites were in the wilderness on the way from Egypt to the Promised Land of Canaan. They didn’t have any means to eat and they were complaining to Moses about how hungry they were and how they wanted to go back to Egypt. God provided manna (bread) for the Israelites every day and they were able to gather as much as they needed for each day. However, they were not allowed to keep any for the next day. Despite these commands, some of them still disobeyed the LORD’s instructions and tried to hold onto it for the next day. Then they woudld discover that the manna was full of maggots and smelled bad. Those that followed the Lord’s instructions by gathering daily had enough manna for their entire family every day.

How many of us are like the Israelites in that way? We spend time with the LORD, but not on a consistent, daily basis. We sometimes try to go off of yesterday’s manna. Not only is it vital for us to be daily cultivating intimacy with the Lord, but that’s where true life, joy, love, and strength is found (Psalm 16:11; 1 John 4:16). I love spending time playing the piano and singing to the Lord, and when I do that, I’m cultivating intimacy with God. Then, when it comes time to get on stage to lead worship, it is coming from the fresh manna rather than yesterday’s manna that is full of maggots and is smelly.

Take time today to receive fresh manna from Him. Read the Bible and ask the Holy Spirit to teach you something new. Don't starve yourself, eat fresh food from heaven today."
