Authentic Worship: Be Prepared

“Live ready, if you have to get ready when the opportunity comes your way, it will be too late. Opportunity does not wait, not even while you pray. You must not have to get ready, you must be ready at all times.” -Smith Wigglesworth

"As worshippers and lead worshippers this is something that we should always have on the forefront of our minds. Being prepared at all times. As I have served in the worship ministry for over 10 years now I have had many times where last minute a pastor or leader will say, “Hey Jonathan, could you lead us in a time of worship?” I didn't have time to pray or get a set list together, I was to lead on the spot. To do this I didn't just sing the first songs that came to mind. Because I have spent time in prayer and spent time with Holy Spirit prior to being called upon; I am spiritually prepared to hear God on a moment's notice and follow Holy Spirit to lead His people into His presence.

Singing a few songs is very easy and almost anyone with a simple level of musicianship could do that. But to lead people to the throne of God and facilitate an experience with Holy Spirit beckons for more. It calls for preparation. In 1 Chronicles 22:5 we see how being experienced and prepared is significant to those in leadership. It reads, “David said, 'My son Solomon is young and inexperienced, and the house to be built for the Lord should be of great magnificence and fame and splendor in the sight of all the nations. Therefore I will make preparations for it.' So David made extensive preparations...”

Here are some practical steps to take to be prepared for what God has called you to regarding being a worship musician:

1. Study the Word of God
- Read your Bible on a daily basis and let God illuminate His Word and His Heart to you.
2. Pray
- Prayer should not be something you do only when you are in a worship set or at church. It should be a continual conversation with Jesus daily.
3. Know your instrument
- Your craft is very important to know. Practice, practice, practice. And then practice some more. You don't want to be distracted from leading worship because you don't know your instrument well enough.
4. Be a student
- Spend time learning from others who have been in the area of worship leading for a while and you trust to be honorable men & women of God.

Are you prepared in season and out of season to preach the Word or lead worship [2 Timothy 4:2]? Begin preparing today so that when the day comes for you to lead people to Christ you are ready?"
