"Where there is no vision, the people perish." - Proverbs 29:18
Sometimes this verse can sometimes be mis-quoted or mis-used. While it is absolutely true that if we do not have vision then we will perish, the application of this verse can be taken out of context by assuming that we have to stir up the vision on our own in order to keep from pershing. Sometimes people will say things like, "you just need to come up with a vision for your life" so that you can have purpose and clarity walking forward into your future. We then run around trying to stir up vision for our lives!
However, a slightly deeper analysis of this verse reveals that the word "vision" could actually be translated as "revelation" or "prophetic vision," as some versions say. In other words, this "vision" is not supposed to be a man-made vision, but a God-made vision.
Having vision for your life does not need to be a complicated, authoritative five year plan with every step of the way planned out. Having vision can be as simple as having a continual desire to look more and more like Jesus in our lives. Philippians 1:6 says that "being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." Having this vision before you will keep you from perishing, because your life will stay focused on getting to know Him more and more and continually being molded into His image.
God may also give you a vision for your life that includes a vocational calling or a calling to a specific location or place. This vision from Him needs to be continually brought up in your heart so that it does not grow cold. It is when we lose focus of our vision that we will perish.
So, don't lose the vision that God has given you! Either to become more like Christ or perhaps a specific matter that He has called you to go after! Stoke those flames and remind yourself continually so that you will not perish, but, instead, accomplish what God has set you after.

What vision for your life has God given you? Make the vision plain and visible so you can go after it (Habakkuk 2:2).
