Jesus called some fishermen to follow Him; immediately they left. They just got up and left. With this calling to become fishers of men came a cost.
Notice that these fishermen had nets, not merely a single rod. These men, who are now fishers FOR men, have to cast out nets, not a single line, but NETS, to save people! They aren't lazily sitting and relaxing waiting for fish, rather, they are using a lot of effort and energy to cast out a net and share the Good News to LARGE amounts. Just a thought..
Jesus may not call all of us to get up and leave our entire life, but He does call all of us to spread the Good News "within our 'nets of influence'"- which may be our co-workers, family, friends, etc. And you know what? It's not a chilled-laid back job. It's strenuous and dedicated effort.
- How are you being intentional in seeking to use your "nets of influence" as a missionary to spread His Word?
- How will you become more dedicated and strenuous in your efforts to catch fish for Jesus?
- How has the Lord been calling you lately? Has He put someone on your heart to fish for? Who? Have you responded?
Jesus, I praise You for calling me to fish for You. Forgive me for failing to impact my sphere of influence for You. help me to use my gifts to draw those within my net of influence to You. Help me to step out of my comfort zone so that I might be an effective fisher of men. Amen.
(Note: I have been paraphrasing and using segments from Cuyahoga Valley Church's devotional booklet Missio Dei. I am in no ways trying to "steal" their work. Just share it.)
